WTF?... WHAT NOW?...: John Ward – EU Accident : Monti Resigns Enter Berlusconi…And An Electoral Free-For-All – 9 December 2012
Posted on December 9, 2012 by lucas2012infos | Leave a comment
Silvio Berlusconi’s PDL Party having withdrawn its support for Italy’s Goldman Sachs technocracy, Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti resigned last night. Berlusconi – who is appealing against a tax evasion conviction, and faces under-age sex charges – had announced his decision to return to frontline politics earlier last week.
EU politicians are a delightful lot, aren’t they? They tend to produce plenty of what Brussels calls ‘mistakes’ – that is, eccentricity, criminality and personal popularity sabotaging The Great Project of a Berlin-dominated superstate. The media in Italy late last night were stressing that Sex Beast Silvio wanted a return to power mainly to get his tax conviction quashed, restore protectionism to his business interests, and then get the bunga-bunga charges dropped. But whatever his motives (and they will almost certainly be base) this is a major spanner in the mysterious works of Angela Merkel and Herman van Rompuy.
First and foremost, it is bound to spook the markets. With no Monti managing the soap opera, they will expect a degree of chaos.
Second, there is the very real likelihood that Berlusconi’s peculiar brand of nationalism will become more extreme: sources overnight were suggesting that the PDL Party will call for the reintroduction of the lira, perhaps even for an official default, as a direct alternative to Monti’s fanatical eurozone support known in ClubMed as ‘extend and pretend’.
Berlusconi will not be alone in running on a ‘get out’ ticket: Beppe Grillo heads the Five Star Movement, an anti-EU, anti-corruption and Eurosceptic party. Signor Grillo is a comedian, actor, fecund blogger, and all-round Italian activist. But he is no joke: his Party won last week’s Sicilian local elections, and a Slog source in Italy described other politicians as being “terrified of what he might achieve in a General Election”.
Those elections will now be brought forward as, under Italian electoral law, a Prime Ministerial resignation from lack of support must trigger a poll within seventy days…some time around February 20th. As we have seen in Greece – with both Golden Dawn and Syriza making rapid electoral progress – these new elections will hand the initiative to the more radical Parties.
All this could spell trouble for new PD (social democrat) leader Pierluigi Bersani. When Bersani won the PD leadership last Monday, Italian newspapers ran banner headlines, La Repubblica even talking about ‘the inevitable path’ of the new man to become Prime Minister a la Hollande in France. But with surging support for 5-Star, and Berlusconi throwing his bunga-bunga into the ring, a stalemate is the almost certain result of the election as and when it happens.
Keep a close eye on reactions from Berlin-am-Brussels. This is going to be a very hard sell to the German electorate….and will almost certainly produce a backlash from the private banking hawks in Frankfurt.
Don’t you love farce?
My fault, I fear.
I thought that you’d want what I want -
Sorry, my dear.
But where are the clowns?
There ought to be clowns.
Quick, send in the clowns.

There ought to be clowns.
Quick, send in the clowns.

GOD SAID: RECEIVE GOD'S LOVE...
Receive God’s Love
Heavenletter #4396 Published on: December 7, 2012
God said:
Do you feel My hand in comfort on your forehead or your cheek? My hand is on you. This is one way I know to comfort you.
Now that I have told you, can you feel My love?
Can you feel My love soaking into your eyes?
Can you feel My love filling your blood vessels? Can you feel a stream of love running through you in this way from head to toe?
Do you feel My love running over your hair? Can you?
Sometimes, good feelings seem to come to you, or the sense of good feeling comes to you, and you know not from where. You may not be able to define the feeling. You may have only a hint, and, yet, you are aware, even if only a little aware.
Sometimes it is like you have heard a loving voice. You hear it without hearing, and yet you turn around and look for where the sound could be coming from?
Do you have an idea of what I am saying? Is there not something familiar in what I am saying now? Do you have even a kind-of idea of what I am saying to you right now? Do you have a vague idea, a subtle awareness of what I am speaking of?
Then, I will logically and intelligently say that you can only grasp what I am saying because you have a memory of it. However slightly it feels familiar, you can know that you have experienced it. You have felt it. You have heard it. You do know what My love feels like. You can know it is yours. You can know I am whispering My love to you at every moment of every day. You know I have a Voice. You can know that I am blessing you with My touch, My words, My heart, My very Being. You can know first hand for yourself that I am with you at every moment, and you can know that you can bring your own awareness to Me whenever you remind yourself to. Remember Me and remember My touch on you through whatever sense it comes. Remember the good feeling and keep that good feeling with you. There is nothing like it.
You can call Me to you. You can embrace Me. You can feel My love surrounding you.
You can place your confidence in Me, as I place My confidence in you.
You can love yourself as I love you. It is ordinary for Me to love you. Make it ordinary for you to love yourself.
Love can be very simple. And yet the simplest, the subtlest is the most profound. Even one touch from Me is lasting. Even one touch from Me is eternal, just as We, you and I, are One. If I can love you, you can love you.
Love is just there, here. Love just is. It’s not a Broadway production. It is as simple as a simple flower. It is as simple as one bite of a sweet pear. It can be as fragile as one smile, and yet love is not fragile. It is tender, but not fragile. It can feel fleetingly, yet love is not fleeting. Love is on the order of the air you breathe and walk through.
There is no place without My love. Love is the essence of all that you know. Love usually introduces itself silently, and it sits down, and it stays forever. You may get up and wander away from love, but love, love never leaves you. And you don’t have to leave it. Embrace it, and it is yours. Return the embrace, and love is still yours. Love is your nature, so keep awareness of it like a key.
DEFECTIONS HAVE BEGUN: Canada Rejects The Pricey F-35 Joint Strike Fighter

Lockheed Martin
Following public outrage and a lengthy political battle, Canadians have finally said thanks but no thanks to America’s F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.
The 5th-generation plane had become a source of controversy after costs soared far beyond the initial estimate from Lockheed Martin and the Pentagon.
Then last spring Auditor General Michael Ferguson called out a bunch of party conservatives who’d been low-balling the jets costs.
Last spring, Ferguson ignited a political firestorm when he reported that the top-line cost cited by the Conservatives in the 2011 election campaign – $9-billion for 65 planes, or $15-billion including maintenance and other life-cycle costs – was $10-billion below the Defence department’s internal estimate.
Even the internal figure of $25.1-billion was suspect, critics said, because it assumed a 20-year life cycle. The longevity of the Lockheed-Martin-built aircraft, according to the Pentagon, is 36 years.
KPMG’s audit, due out next week, has confirmed the contention, long made by critics such as former assistant deputy minister (materiel) Alan Williams, that the F-35 program’s real cost would be much higher than any previously stated government estimate, sources say.
Parliamentary Budget Officer Kevin Page predicted a cost of $30 billion over a 30-year life cycle.
That was pretty much all it took and now, the deal is supposed to be deader than dead leaving our neighbors to the north but a handful of years in aging CF-18s that really won’t see much flying at all after the end of the decade.
With all the money it’s saving, Canadian officials are about to go shopping and look for some bargains.
And let’s be honest, pretty much everything else out there is a comparative bargain to the JSF. Acquisition specialists will certainly start with Boeing’s Super Hornet, Dassault’s Rafale, Saab’s Gripen, and the Eurofighter Typhoon to replace the CF-18 fleet.
Huffington Post Canada points out the representative for the Prime Minister’s Office is denying the $40 billion deal is dead, but also points out he’s lied about publicly made remarks in the past and his word carries less weight than it could. Check out HuffPo’s Canadian Politics section here for further details.
Canada had been told the F-35 package would run about $9 billion, but aside from delays and excuses that number had seen heights of $40 billion.
And thanks to my favorite Canadian Mike Pearson for cluing me in to this last night as it was developing up north.
It seems likely that Lockheed and the Pentagon saw the Canadian writing on the wall, as it were, and perhaps braced themselves for this cancellation. Their concerns would have been heightened because for every partner country that withdraws its purchase order, the remaining countries end up footing more of the bill. With rising costs of the F-35 one of the main program complaints, mitigating this bump may already be on the Pentagon’s agenda.
Reuters reported as early as November 29 that the U.S. Air Force was actively committing once again to its purchase of 1,763 F-35 Joint Strike Fighters for about $400 billion.
One day after that Reuters went on to report that Lockheed and the Pentagon agreed to a $3.8 billion deal for another 32 F-35s. This second ‘batch’ of planes runs about half the price of the original run.
Canada’s grumblings have been echoing from the north for some time, but aside from mild concerns in the UK over the F-35 model its chosen, the Short Takeoff and Vertical Landing (STOVL) designation, most member countries seem to be waiting patiently for the JSFs to arrive.
Lockheed and the Pentagon have massaged these deals endlessly over the years as they fought to get the F-35 rolling and then to keep it alive.
Incentives like Japan’s where F-35 parts will begin to be manufactured under a relaxed arms deal is just one of the ‘wink-and-a-handshake’ type bonuses designed to keep everyone patient, and from not following Canada’s example.
Will Elizabeth Warren Go to War Against Big Banks?
Will Elizabeth Warren Go to War Against Big Banks?

By SUZANNE MCGEE, The Fiscal Times
December 6, 2012
Right about now, Republicans in Congress may be wishing that they had let President Barack Obama appoint Elizabeth Warren as the first head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the organization that is her brainchild. They won the battle – preventing her appointment to that job – but seem to have lost the war, as Warren won a Senate seat last month. Now, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) is said to be intent on adding her to the roster of Democrats on the Senate’s powerful Banking Committee.

Warren joins the Senate just as Barney Frank – another Massachusetts Democrat, one of the most influential members of the House Financial Services Committee and co-author of the much-hated Dodd-Frank bank reform legislation – leaves. But for Republicans and bankers, replacing Frank with Warren might be more than just replacing one ideological adversary with another.
Warren is a pragmatist and a lawyer, more reserved than Frank and more cautious (albeit less witty) in her public pronouncements. Odds are that centrist Republicans will find her collegial. That’s one threat to those who remain vehemently opposed to further implementation of the Dodd-Frank reforms or any other banking regulation.
As a member of the Senate committee, Warren would have a hand in crafting new rules or closing perceived gaps in existing ones. She could simply use her stature to push for more sweeping reforms (breaking up the big banks, say) or to fight back against those who want to block future changes, such as, say, taxing carried interest at the same levels as regular income. (Currently, it is taxed at a much lower level, a fact that has helped make multi-millionaires and billionaires of many buyout fund managers.)
She may be a neophyte in the halls of Congress – she hasn’t even been sworn in yet – but Warren commands respect for her critique of Wall Street. That has populist appeal across party lines among the electorate. Republican lawmakers may have sneered when she declared at the Democratic National Convention this year that “the system is rigged” and blasted Wall Street CEOs for continuing to “strut” around Washington “demanding favors, and acting like we should thank them.” But that message may resonate with grassroots GOP voters, even if they differ in their prescriptions to solve the problem.
It’s hardly surprising that Democrats would want Warren in a place where she can best deploy her extensive knowledge of Wall Street and of financial legislation, honed during the battle to create the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Nor is it surprising that Wall Street lobbyists are said to be battling against her joining the Banking Committee. She’s a far greater threat to their interests than Chuck Schumer, the New York Democrat who has earned the title of the Senator from Wall Street, reflecting the fact that Wall Street donations to Schumer consistently have dwarfed those to any other candidate on either side of the aisle.
The Fiscal TimesFREE Newsletter
Still, Warren’s opponents may be wrong to view her as anti-bank. She isn’t talking publicly about what she may do specifically in her new role as Senator and in her possible future position as a member of the Banking Committee. Still, looking back to a conversation I had with her in the summer of 2009, there are some interesting indicators.
First of all, she was adamant that she wants a free market to work; that legislation should achieve that. One of the problems with the system leading up to the financial crisis was that “the market was broken,” she argued. The evidence of that, Warren says, could be seen in banks’ efforts to obscure the fact that mortgage and credit card contracts were set up to be hard for the average consumer to understand – and to maximize banks’ profits.
Multi-million dollar advertising campaigns by the big banks reinforced their dominance in the market and ensured that the playing field between big and small banks was anything but level. In that kind of environment, with banks focused on creating “tricks and traps buried in the fine print” for consumers, it’s hard for financial institutions to create genuinely innovative financial products that are useful for consumers and can generate profits for their creators. Smaller banks, community banks and credit unions are the victims of this system.
Odds are that the advocates of breaking up the biggest banks will find in Warren one of their most powerful supporters. But they shouldn’t expect her to initiate legislation aimed at forcing the likes of JPMorgan Chase (JPM) and Citigroup (C) to unwind themselves within the next year or two. Warren is smart enough to know how to operate in Washington and to realize that before pushing through any radical plans she’ll need to forge new alliances with those who today view her as a liberal who views any new regulation as a good thing.
Her ability to do that is likely to be a risk in the eyes of Wall Street, as is the fact that rather than focusing narrowly on specific agenda items – taxing carried interest, implementing the Volcker rule or Dodd-Frank provisions – she is likely to emphasize a broad mission: reminding the public and her new Senate colleagues that Wall Street’s goal is to serve Main Street, not profit while the broader public struggles. “We’re Americans,” Warren told the convention last summer. “We celebrate success. We just don’t want the game to be rigged.”

ANYTHING NEW?... FOR SOME IT IS: “Rogue elements of U.S. Government and Military” Smuggled Heroin in Dead Soldiers Bodies During Vietnam War
“Rogue elements of U.S. Government and Military” Smuggled Heroin in Dead Soldiers Bodies During Vietnam War
Yes, gutted the bodies, and then filled each one with up to 50 pounds of heroin.
Are we surprised? Does anything the “authorities” do surprise us anymore? Here’s a compendium sent out this morning to subscribers of wanttoknow.info that helps us absorb just what was going on way back then, and makes nefarious alternatives to official versions of, for example, the Kennedy assasinations and the 911 tragedy, seem not just possible, but likely.
I think that the main reason the American public keeps on getting fooled, besides our addictive penchant for comfort, entertainment, and material distractions of all kinds, is our sheer refusal to believe that anyone could be that bad! But now that bankster revelations are out in the open, and now that all wars are being revealed as false-flag opportunities for ever more power and profit by aerospace industries, so that no matter which “side” wins or loses, the corporate governmental medico military industrial complex wins — i.e., now that everything we once held dear has been reduced to ashes, it’s no longer so hard to believe that we good people have been herded like sheep into small mental enclosures of belief: religion, politics, economics, science, academia. All rotting from internal corruption.
Time to wake up and take back the reins of our beautiful lives.
Government Smuggled Heroin in Bodies of Dead GIs According to Military, DEA Whistleblowers
Dear friends,
WantToKnow.info recently received an excellent update to the below revealing email sent to us on April 20, 2004. Both the original email and the update were written and sent by Bob Kirkconnell, a courageous career military man who describes here how he personally witnessed a very large-scale drug smuggling operation which likely involved rogue elements of the US government and military.
Shortly after receiving his initial email, we put Bob in touch with Mike Levine, a 25-year veteran of the DEA who also personally witnessed large-scale drug smuggling by the government. After his whistleblowing, Mike became a target and had to go underground several years for his own safety. Read the beautiful story of what happened after Mike and Bob connected below.
SInce 2004, Bob has researched this case deeply and found lots of highly revealing information to support his claims. His updated comments sent Nov. 10, 2012 are interspersed between paragraphs of his original message with italics and indenting to distinguish these more recent findings. He also gives a key quote from a book by a Wall Street Journal front-page editor supporting his claims. At the end of this email are empowering suggestions for what you can do to make a difference.

I am Bob Kirkconnell, a retired Air Force chief master sergeant. I spent 27 years on active duty, and now teach high school. I was involved in an investigation of heroin smuggling into the US using killed-in-action human remains out of Vietnam. This happened in 1972 or 1973, and since then I have been looking for any information that would explain the whole picture. Your web site is the first info I have been able to find in over 30 years.
Update, Nov. 10, 2012: I retired from teaching in 2010. This case was investigated by the Air Force Office of Special Investigations in December, 1972. Since writing the above, I have found other connections to this case, one of which was Green Beret captain and physician Jeffery MacDonald. He was investigating heroin smuggling in G.I. corpses at Ft. Bragg, NC when he and his whole family were attacked by a gang of drug users. He was the only survivor with 17 stab wounds, three of which should have been fatal. Strangely, MacDonald was charged with the murders. He is now in jail appealing his case. One of the witnesses, Helena Stoeckley, stated that Thomas Edward Southerland was involved in this case also. These so-called “Fatal Vision” murders happened in 1970.
I was an Air Transportation Supervisor in those days stationed at Kadena Air Base, Okinawa, Japan. One day we had an Air Force C-5 come in that was only scheduled for a few hours servicing (intransit), and then to continue on to Travis Air Force Base, California. This plane contained between 80 and 90 transfer cases (87 is the number I recall) containing human remains, killed-in-action, out of Vietnam. When it arrived, the plane broke, went into maintenance, and we had to order parts that would take over 24 hours to receive.
Update, Nov. 10, 2012: The 80 to 90 figure I stated above is likely to have been inaccurate. I do not recall the exact figure, but I do recall the master sergeant I worked for briefing me that “The whole shipment had been gutted and stuffed with heroin.” It is possible that the above figure was a rumor that stuck in my memory, but the source did not. I checked with the National Archives and the total number of war dead for 1972 was 759, so it is highly unlikely that the number I stated in 2004 was accurate.
On intransit aircraft, Japanese customs did not get involved unless the plane was going to be on the ground more than 24 hours. This was the case with this C-5. After the plane was fixed we noticed that the two couriers for the human remains could not be located. This was highly unusual. One of the couriers was an Army major and the other was an Army master sergeant. We started looking for them and notified Japanese customs that something was very suspicious. We discovered that the master sergeant had taken another flight to Hawaii. The name he was traveling under was Sutherland. We never did find the major, and I do not recall his name.
Update, Nov. 10, 2012: The proper spelling of the master sergeant’s name was Southerland. This had to have been Thomas Edward Southerland, who was tried in a Baltimore Md. Federal court in connection with this case in 1973. This case was also written about in a Time magazine article, January 1st, 1973 edition, and the name given for the suspect was Thomas Edward Southerland. The federal attorney who prosecuted the case was Michael Marr. He is now in private practice in the Baltimore, Md. area. I contacted him via e-mail a few years back and he said that he remembered the case well and that if I had questions about the case to “feel free to ask” him about it. I had several questions that I did ask him, but he did not reply. I tried several more times to contact him but never got a response other than the first one. I am pretty sure that the rank of the other person who disappeared was captain, not major. I still do not recall his name, but I remember it being of French extraction.
Japanese customs opened the transfer cases and found that all of the bodies had had their internal organs removed, and that they were stuffed with bags of pure heroin. An Air Force Office of Special Investigations, OSI, agent contacted me and told me “not to release any documents pertaining to the incident to anyone but him.” One of my responsibilities was for processing and storage of all cargo and passenger documentation. He told me that he would let me know what he needed at a later date. I passed this info on to my people that worked the night shift. That night an Army investigator from Criminal Investigations Division, CID, came to the records section and demanded these records. He threatened to put our personnel in jail for obstructing an investigation, etc. The shift supervisor refused to give him the records, and eventually he went away.
Update, Nov. 10, 2012: The master sergeant I reported to briefed me that Japanese customs officials had been alerted by passenger reservations personnel that the couriers could not be found for the human remains shipment and that this was highly unusual. I have tried to locate the above master sergeant but have been unable to find him, nor have I found a record of his death.
Master Sergeant Sutherland (this was an alias) was apprehended in Hawaii a few days later, and was charged with several offenses. He was tried in a federal court in Washington, DC, and one of our captains testified at the trial. The OSI agent in Okinawa came to me before the trial and signed for all related documentation (orders, aircraft manifest, etc.). He sent this via US registered mail, signature service required, to the federal prosecutor in Washington.
Update, Nov. 10, 2012: Again, the name was “Southerland.” I have discovered that this name was not an alias, but was this person’s name of record. According to Time Magazine article, Jan. 1, 1973, Southerland was apprehended at Andrews A.F.B., Md. Terminal Reservations personnel told me that Southerland had flown from Kadena A.B., Japan, to Hickam A.F.B., Hawaii, on his orders that had “variations authorized” typed in them. This meant that he could change his destination and take a military flight to any location. When a military person varies their destination through Passenger Terminal Reservations and flies on their orders and not a Military Transportation Authorization, my office would not have had a copy of the orders. The orders would have been retained and filed at Reservations, so I did not see these orders. Southerland maintains that he was traveling on falsified leave orders, but this was not what I was told. The prosecutor, Michael Marr, referred to travel orders in this case and not leave orders and the difference is important. Leave orders would not have linked him as a courier for human remains but official travel orders would have. My understanding was that he was traveling on orders issued by the 5th Army Field Hospital in Thailand, but I cannot state that as a fact.
The evidence never got to the court. I know this because I was concerned that the records needed to be returned to the files, and I inquired about them about once a week. The OSI agent eventually told me that the records had disappeared and signed a statement that the documentation was missing and could not be returned. I put this in the files. He also told me that Sutherland was convicted of only one charge–unauthorized wear of a US military uniform. None of the other charges were proven because of lack of evidence. He also told me that Sutherland was not his real name, and that he and the major with him had never been in the Army.
Update, Nov. 10, 2012: As before, Southerland was the spelling of the name, and the rank given as major was a captain. Apparently Southerland was charged with more than one offense having to do with illegal travel on military aircraft and illegal wear of a military uniform. I found no evidence that he was charged with any offense having to do with drugs or smuggling drugs using bodies.
I knew this OSI agent because I had researched several other cases of drug smuggling on military aircraft. I usually did not ask him questions which I thought he was not at liberty to answer. He always told me everything that I needed to know to research illegal activities. Most of the cases were relatively small-time drug smuggling. This case was something that was way over-the-top. All of us that knew the enormity of this case were flabbergasted. The forged documentation was flawless and had to have been done by experts in the air transportation field. Also, our people who saw the two impostors said that their uniforms and ID cards were perfect.
Further, when we talked about this, we were astounded with the enormity of this operation. The mortuary in Vietnam had to have put the heroin in the bodies, and the one at Travis Air Force Base, California had to remove the heroin, and it had to be distributed, ID cards had to be obtained, orders had to be made, etc. This was no smalltime operation.
Update, Nov. 10, 2012: One of the lingering questions is where these bodies came from, and what port was their destination? I assumed that the bodies had to have originated at either Da Nang Air Base, South Vietnam, or Ton Son Nhut Air Base because these were the only mortuaries in Vietnam at the time. I have discovered, however, that the 5th Army Field Hospital near Bangkok, Thailand, was taking over the handling of Vietnam fatalities because the two in-county mortuaries were closing. It is possible that the bodies came from there. Prosecutor Michael Marr stated to the press that Southerland was wearing Army medical insignia on his uniform. If true, this leads one to seriously question how this could simply be a coincidence. I also assumed that Travis Air Force Base, CA, was the port of debarkation because it had the only military mortuary on the West Coast. This, however, might not have been the case.
I never forgot this event and it changed the way I looked at things from that time on. I recall hearing Maxine Waters, Congresswoman from California, talk about the FBI dumping enormous quantities of heroin in the inner-cities to destroy the social fabric of black communities. I also think about the fact that about one-third of African American males have criminal records and cannot vote in many states. And then there was Iran-Contra that involved cocaine smuggling. I wonder about the so-called “War on Drugs.” Maybe it is really a war against African Americans. I also notice that Afghanistan has a bumper crop of opium, and I wonder if that might have had something to do with our invasion and the Northern Alliance taking over much of the country. Finally, I have never been stationed on an Air Base that I didn’t suspect was being used for drug smuggling.
Update, Nov. 10, 2012: In the years since writing this letter, I have found substantial evidence that the above suspicions are based in fact. As the late author Gary Webb explains in detail in his bookDark Alliance: The CIA, the Contras, and the Cocaine Explosion, there is much more to drug smuggling than what we are seeing in the news. There is also evidence that minorities are being targeted. For example, the mandatory jail sentences for crack cocaine, used mostly by African Americans, is in most localities about six times that of powder cocaine, mostly the choice of white Americans.

How We Responded
How We Responded
Shortly after receiving it, I forwarded Bob’s 2004 email to Mike Levine, a member of the WantToKnow.info team. Mike is a 25-year veteran of the DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency) turned best-selling author and journalist. For many years he has hosted the popular Expert Witness radio show on WBAI in New York. His articles and interviews on the drug war have also been published in numerous national newspapers and magazines, including the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, USA Today, and Esquire.
Upon receiving the forwarded email, Mike was most interested in Bob’s account. As a top DEA agent, Mike was involved himself in a similar case. Here is a quote from Mike on his experience:
“The Chang Mai ‘factory’ that the CIA prevented me from destroying was the source of massive amounts of heroin being smuggled into the US in the bodies and body bags of GIs killed in Vietnam. Case after case was killed by CIA and State Department intervention, and there wasn’t a thing we could do about it.”
You can read more about this on our website at this link. Bob and Mike eventually had a deeply moving radio interview on New York’s WBAI on June 21, 2004, titled “The Vietnam Body Bag Case.” Mike later wrote me an email saying: “The show on the body bag case was very emotional to both of us. We were both loyal servicemen whose notions of [our government's integrity] were crushed … and the show is the very first time real witnesses to those horrific events came together to compare notes. Anyone who hears the show will most certainly be affected.”
Additional Note by Bob Kirkconnell Written in November 2012
Additional Note by Bob Kirkconnell Written in November 2012
My recollection of this over 30 year old case is certainly not perfect. Facts, speculation, and rumor tend to merge over the years, and the human mind tends to fill in blank spots on its own in order to make sense of events that do not make sense.
I have thought about this a lot, and the above is true to the best of my knowledge. I am also positive that the above investigation did happen, and it was conducted by the Air Force Office of Special Investigations at Kadena AB, Japan, beginning in December, 1972. Further, the results of this investigation, to my knowledge, were not made public one way or the other as far as what was found or not found. Further, I am positive that evidence did disappear out of official channels.
In addition to the above, there have been other incidents that do appear to be credible. One of these was reported by award winning investigative journalistJonathan Kwitny, front page editor for the Wall Street Journal for much of the 1980’s, who wrote several excellent investigative non-fiction books. One of these books was The Crimes of Patriots: A True Tale of Dope, Dirty Money, and the CIA, in which Kwitny went into some detail about heroin smuggling out of Vietnam using the bodies of G.I.’s. Here’s what Kwitny found, taken verbatim frompage 52 of the above book:
“Another former officer from the army’s Criminal Investigation Division recalls a mammoth heroin scheme he and his colleagues uncovered by accident. He says he and four others from his unit were investigating corruption in the sale of supplies to commissioned- and noncommissioned-officers’ clubs. The corrupt U.S. and Vietnamese officers they caught tried to bargain away jail terms by describing the heroin traffic involving Vietnamese politicians and senior U.S. officers. The reports checked out, the investigator says.“The investigator, now a stockbroker, says that his investigation group filed reports to the Pentagon revealing that G.I. bodies being flown back to the United States were cut open, gutted, and filled with heroin. Witnesses were prepared to testify that the heroin-stuffed soldiers bore coded body numbers, allowing conspiring officers on the other end, at Norton Air Force Base in California, to remove the booty – up to fifty pounds of heroin per dead G.I.“The Army acted on these reports – not by coming down on the dope traffickers, but by disbanding the investigative team and sending them to combat duty, the former investigator says. Other reports corroborate the use of G.I. bodies to ship dope back to the United States via military channels.”
The late Jonathan Kwitny spent his entire life in the profession of journalism. As aWall Street Journal editor, he was well aware of the need for validity of the story and also the reliability of sources. It is true that there has not been, to my knowledge, a prosecution of any case that involved drugs smuggled in the bodies of G.I.s, but the question remains; is that because these cases have been suppressed as above, or that it never happened? This question is still open.
